Due to start in just three, short days I'm primed and ready. The PVR is set to record our minimalist coverage here on Versus (just look for Dakar Highlights), my Azureus is fired up and ready to scrape feeds from Racing Underground (where I get the Eurosport coverage) and I'm all subscribed to Rally-Raid Live.

Did I mention that I'm a bit of a Dakar race fan?

Just in case you have never heard of the Dakar Rally or would like to know what it's like to ride a motorcycle in the rally, here's a little primer for you.

Another vid that spans several years of Dakar racing, including some footage from the team Redbull KTM prep from last year. In that group is Elmer Symons (R.I.P) pulling a sweet wheelie (about 15 seconds in).

Oh, and the music is not my fault. OMFG

Wow, this is some older coverage mixed in with some stuff from newer Dakars, up to 2003.

Wow.

Some old, twin-cylinder bikes in this one. I think I saw Peterhansel's Yamaha twin also.

Long gone....

Due to terrorist acts in Mauritania and direct threats against the race, the 2008 edition of the Dakar Rally has been canceled.

You can see this message that I've copied in below here.

Lisbon, Friday the 4th of January 2008
A.S.O. cancels the 2008 edition of the Dakar rally

After different exchanges with the French government - in particular the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - , and based on their firm recommendations, the organisers of the Dakar have taken the decision to cancel the 2008 edition of the rally, scheduled from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal’s capital.

Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 24th of December linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb, but also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organisations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken by A.S.O.

A.S.O.’s first responsibility is to guarantee the safety of all: that of the populations in the countries visited, of the amateur and professional competitors, of the technical assistance personnel, of the journalists, partners and rally collaborators. A.S.O. therefore reaffirms that the choice of security is not, has never been and will never be a subject of compromise at the heart of the Dakar rally.

A.S.O. condemns the terrorist menace that annihilates a year of hard work, engagement and passion for all the participants and the different actors of the world’s biggest off-road rally. Aware of the huge frustration, especially in Portugal, Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, and beyond the general disappointment and the huge economical consequences in terms of direct and indirect repercussions for the countries visited, A.S.O. will continue to defend the major values of great sporting events and will carry on its engagement for a durable development through the Actions Dakar, started 5 years ago in sub-Saharan Africa with SOS Sahel International.

The Dakar is a symbol and nothing can destroy symbols. The cancellation of the 2008 edition does not endanger the future of the Dakar. To offer, for 2009 a new adventure to all the off-road rally passionate is a challenge that A.S.O. will take on in the months to come, faithful to its engagement and its passion for sports.

And you know.........it is only going to get worse.......wait till they have to cancel the Olympics or Super-Bowl or something like that......
The damn world is going to RUCKUS and fast.......I am what I would consider a pretty peace-ful man unless you mess with one of mine;be it my family, property or COUNTRY......but this mess is getting way out of hand.....

Was reading where our Army has been deployed at the Iraq Zoo to "clean it up"....they are rebuilding enclosures, bringing back the health and basically building a ZOO.......come on.......have you been to Burnet Park Zoo lately...?...I think we need to get the hell out of everyone elses business.....Let them kill each other off and if we quit supplying them with everything from weapons to toilet paper they are going to eventually run out of everything and go back to throwing rocks at each other.....You cant reason with the menality of "Its better to blow ones self up than to be dishonored".......how much honor comes with killing inocent people...?...

And by the way....Where the hell do they all come from..?...The towel heads are alwasy killing each other but doesnt seem like there is a shortgae of them.....I say "Catch the sum-bitches,make them in-fertile and in a few years the @#$% will end or they will just fade away into history".........

Sorry to get ranting but this @#$% is getting to me lately........

GWH...
Have you ever been to the Black River Stages?

Bring that Strom down to Jersey in October and you will forget all about Dakar

I read a lot about that race on ADVRider and other places this past year. When you told me that you participated I have to admit, I was very jealous. I haven't ridden a 2 wheeler off-road in a long time, tend to hurt myself as I never thought I had limits. I miss it though and I've been thinking about a 400 like yours to get back into it. Been thinking hard...
