It kicked off today, I woke up this morning, fired up the PC and saw that I'm only 5 hours behind the racing action. The motorcycles were just coming in to finish the first stage!!! If there's one benefit to the Dakar rally moving to South America, this has to be it. Well, that and a little less chance of the racers/spectators/general population being shot/tortured and/or blown up by terrorists of course.

DAKAR News & Photo Links:
 * Best Source for Information - DAKAR racing thread at ADVRider.com
 * Great source for photos - Motorsport.com - DAKAR page
 * The official Dakar site - Dakar.com
 * Excellent independent coverage - Raid-Live
 * VS will have coverage at 3:30pm with repeat at 6:30pm every day starting tomorrow.

One thing you should know, being the devoted sort of riders that you are, is that there is one very cool quad in the race this year. Well, there's more than one, but this story is kinda cool.

Camelia Liparoti, of Chamonix, France, is racing a KTM 525XC. First ever for KTM and first Dakar rally for this moto-journalist turned off-road rally racer. Here's a pic of her coming up to the start in Buenos Aires:

Forgot one little thing.

Love him or hate him, Robby Gordon is putting a bigger effort into this years race than ever before. His site normally has lots of great info, photos and video.
