Speculator - Powley Rd - Salisbury - Poland - Deerfield -
Penn Mt - Ohio - Morehouse
1/21/09
Got to the Speculator Ball field at 7:45AM, Darrin got there later so we didn't leave until 9:00. Lake Pleasant had tons of tracks on it, somewhat uneven riding. The Page Street trail to Moffitt Beach was bumpy, we past the Lake Pleasant groomer
The Fish Mountain trail was actually in great riding shape; one of the best rides I’ve had on that trail. Oxbow Lake was fast and flat. Spy Lake trail was a good ride.
Powley Road had some rollers, especially south of the Piseco Lodge trail; but overall it was a good ride. The C8A/C4 goat path to Stratford was in pretty good shape. The trail from Stratford to the Salisbury Ridge Runners Clubhouse was freshly groomed and excellent riding. The groomers did a great job shelving the snowbanks.
After a short stop at the Clubhouse, we hit Military Road. . . the biggest letdown of the day. Lots of rollers and bumps. Needed grooming badly.
Poland to Deerfield was bumpy and rough in the woods. But the open field riding was awesome! Couldn’t get enough of it. The trail was heaven after we crossed the covered bridge.
Once we got to the Penn Mountain trails the trails were good, The woods trails in Barneveld were choppy, but the open field and power lines riding was out of this world. . . WOW!! After burger and soup at the Bowling Alley, we pressed on. Starr Hill through Remson was freshly groomed and incredible riding.
The trail along Route 365 to the Hinkley Dam was in pretty good shape, but there was some unavoidable road riding. The prize of the day was the Hinkley State Forest; freshly groomed to perfection. . . a snowmobile superhighway all to ourselves!
C4B and C4 through Ohio were great riding as we followed the groomer all the way through. The roads had adequate snow cover for lube, but the carbides were scratching.
Jones Road could use a comb-over with the groomer, but it was decent riding back up to Hamilton County.
C4 though Morehouse was incredible; a goatpath as flat as a tabletop with a fresh inch of snow on it. It was getting dark at this point which made me feel much better about leading the way than I normally would. The trail got a bit shredded after we passed the Bear Path spur, but then got really nice again after we encountered the groomer coming back through. C4A to Evergreen Lake was good. Evergreen Lake to Piseco Lake Lodge was fairly bumpy but passable.
The trail between Piseco Lake and Oxbow Lake was nice once we crossed Old Piseco Road. Then it was back to the Speculator Ball field. The Page Street trail was bumpy;
Overall, it was a great ride
