2009 KTM 300 XC-We

After months of shopping for a used KTM I came across a deal I couldn't pass up, and it was on a new one. I called the KTM Dealer in Ballston Spa. What a bunch of nice guys. It was refreshing to finally do business with somebody that didn't act like they were doing me a favor.
I was looking hard for an '08 300 XC-We for two reasons. The '08s have a seat height that is 1" higher than the older bikes, and the "08s had a price that I was more comfortable with than the '09s. With the US economy shrinking at the current rate, and people panicking at an even higher rate, bike sales are slow. They were happy to move a bike at a lower price, and I was happy to get a deal.
I'm pretty pumped about it. The bad part is that the snow will continue to be too deep to ride for quite a while yet. Last year I wasn't able to get my bike around the fields until April, and we had snow patches in the woods May. Good thing we're doing the Hatifield McCoy ride in another 5 weeks!
I'd sure like to give it a shakedown run beofre taking it riding for a week...but it's not going to happen.

I don't pick it up until Tuesday, but I'll be sure to post some pics of the actual bike. Until then, here's a pic form the KTM Website.

Be sure to get one of those fancy carbon fiber pipe guards for the chamber! I think every KTM two stoke I've seen has a dented pipe! Is that one of the "select models" that qualifies for the free "Ready to Race" kit? http://www.ktm.com/fileadmin/systemdata/downloads/customer_springpromo.pdfWoops... Don't see the 300 listed.

Sweet!! I think that my next toy will have to be a dirt bike, or at least a dual sport. I love atv's, but grew up riding dirt bikes. My first "real" dirt bike was a 2 stroke Yamaha 125 AT2. I had a Honda 185XL dual sport after that.

Phantom, Only 4 strokes qualify. That's because 2 strokes rule-4 strokes drool! Actually a 4 stroke would have been nice, but the maintenance on the new bikes is WAAAYY to much. ADK Man, I enjoy riding ATVs, but for me, there's nothing like riding on 2 wheels. There are lots of great dual sports out there right now. I bet once you get back on 2 wheels, you'll wonder why you ever stopped. Joe

I remember a 20 hour service interval on Honda top ends? That's two - three days of riding for real people. A little side note... We were working on a friends KTM back in November at the Hammer Run... He had lost his rear brake. My wife is holding the flashlight while we were trying to bleed the brakes, she looks the bike over and she says "KTMs are the Ski Doo of motorcycles" Take that for what you want she didn't mean it in a good way! Good thing Jack Lafferty Sr. showed up with his pressure bleeder or we would still be there pumping!

I agree, but it's still at least $1000.00 for the mileage I put on in a year or two. To spend 8 grand on a bike that needs that kind of maintenance is just too rich for my blood. 4 strokes tuned for a normal performance level are great, but the new hyper ones scare my wallet.

Sad that like you say an 8K machine needs that kind of maintenance. If you are actually racing for points or money and your abilities demand that kind of equipment I could see it but for the average rider why spend the $$. Guess that's why I ride my DRZ... a $100.00 set of tires and a few oil changes a year and I'm good. If I stay off the pavement for the most part the tires last me two seasons.

The DRZs are great, as are a lot of 4 strokes. They have very nice manners, predictable performance, can be trailed easily as long as you are not trying to win at Unadilla on one, and run forever.
It's cool that the OEMs are able to get such extreme performance out of the new 4 strokes, but the price tag for doing so is pretty high. I guess it's all according to what you're used to. I know a guy that runs a top fuel funny car. He's got $100,000 just in the engine of that car. He spends way more money in a year than I will in a lifetime of riding a dirt bike. It's still tough to plunk down your money one one though. I'm glad I've never been bitten by the racing bug. The riding bug is bad enough.

Does this new KTM mean you will have a KDX that will be sitting around collecting dust? PJ, what was your friend's name that raced KTMs in hare scrambles?

Hi Kurt, If you're talking about PJs buddy Randy, that rides the EXC200, I met him on the ride in Pa. That guy is crazy-fast. He let me ride his bike, and he rode mine. Nice guy, and a FEARLESS rider! The KDX is going to be sold or parted out. It was part of the deal for me getting a new bike, was that the old one had to go and the money went into the household budget. I may use it as partial trade on an ATV that my buddy has. My wife wants to start riding. Joe

Yes, Randy is the guy. I never got to ride bikes with him as he rode PJ's quad last time out. I am kicking myself for not picking up a KDX before they stopped making them. I wonder what the chances of finding a leftover would be, 2006 was the last year right?
