Oswego County/Cayuga County (WSYR-TV) - Francis Thompson of Green Road in Sterling is facing several charges for allegedly leading Oswego County Sheriffs Deputies on a chase through Oswego and Cayuga Counties while riding an ATV.
The Sheriff’s Department says the chase happened on June 24th. It started in Hanibal, when Thompson allegedly ignored an officer’s request to get off his ATV. Instead, Thompson allegedly sped up as he got closer to the Sheriff’s Deputy, causing the deputy to jump out of the way to avoid getting run-over.
The deputy pursued Thompson in his patrol car, and the Sheriff’s Department says Thompson repeatedly crashed his ATV into the deputy’s car in an effort to knock him off the road.
Once Thompson entered Cayuga County, he allegedly went down a dirt road, and had to stop due to a fence. As the officer approached him, Thompson allegedly sped back in the other direction. The deputy had just gripped the ATV, and was knocked to the ground as Thompson allegedly sped off.
Thompson was chased back into Oswego County, but got away. He was arrested yesterday, thanks to help from the Oswego Police Department.
Thompson has been charged with two counts of second degree reckless endangerment, second degree resisting arrest, second degree obstructing governmental administration, failure to display plates, unlawful operation of an ATV on a highway, having an unregistered ATV, failure to comply with an order, and uninsured operation of a vehicle.
He was arraigned in Town of Hannibal Court, and sent to the Oswego County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash or bond bail. He will be back in court on July 25th.
