2001 Honda TRX350 4x4, with a loud transmission

I have a friend with a 2001 Honda TRX350 4x4, very low hours and in nice shape.  He is the second owner and uses it very sparingly and is a gentle rider (it might have 100 hours on it).  He said it shifter hard and was very notchy, I adjusted the clutch and he said it was better but still notchy.  I took it out for a lap around the yard and sure enough it really clunky in and out of each gear.  It hits the gears fine but is very loud and well, not smooth.

Is there anything I can do to smooth out the shifting?

Nope that's the way they are I've ridden several from almost new to rode hard and put away wet type owners and all have that  whack in each gear. I had the smoothest shifting by reving it up a lil higher and almost double clutching by holding the lever down and taping the gas quick and let the lever out as the motor is winding down. But like I said all the 350, 300 and 450 shaft driven 4x4 hondas I've rode all have the same clunking.
