I received a email from Mark C. Walczyk, Legislative Director for Senator Patricia A. Ritchie in response to the request that I made in that she review the weight limit on ATV’s.  Since my visit to her new office in Watertown she has taken action and supports the below Bill.

Senator Ritchie currently sponsors Senate Bill S.3318 which changes the definition of an ATV in the Vehicle and Traffic Law by increasing the allowed dry weight to 1500lbs.

STATUS:
S3318  RITCHIE   No Same as
Vehicle and Traffic Law
TITLE....Relates to the definition of all terrain vehicle or "ATV"

02/16/11   REFERRED TO TRANSPORTATION

That's cool.  There is a growing number of those things around.  I can see their appeal increasing, especially for those filks that don't have an interest in sport riding.

The “Side by Side” bill, which would allow machines up to 1500 lbs. to be registered as ATVs passed out of Transporation.

It would be nice not having to dodge the DEC anymore but the bigger issue for me is the club trails aren't wide enough for a 60 inch wide UTV. I’m always slowing down, sometimes repositioning.  I'm trading for a 50 inch RZR. I don't believe a commander will fit through the bridge going into Orwell as well as some of the other OCATV bridges.

There’s some guys on the RZR forum that would have lots of fun with “sport riding” comment.

Just the usual apathy... Most users won't bother writing a letter or get involved in making something happen they just wait for people like JZO to get things done then complain that nothing is happening.

i have to give my opinion (which is just that, an opinion) that the trails are getting too wide becuase of these big 60" plus machines. i understand that all have a right to ride and everyones tastes are different, but i noticed the trails on the lewis county reforestation lots have gotten wider this year, making them less fun for me. i might as well be on a road, they arent even a trail anymore. i dont mind quad trail but when the trails start to get 6 ft wide, its just boring.
i would love to develop some dedicated bike-only singletrack out there for the bike riders with passes. i see alot of people on dirtbikes and dual sports out there. i think it would be very well recieved. and i would not mind donating my time to make it happen.

If you want tight technical trails, forget public trails and buy some wooded property for yourself, or come on down to a harescrable race. WNYOA has 10-14 races a year and you'll get more than your fill of tight trails.

As our Trail System expands and has been operational nowq for a couple of years the issue how do you get into the interior to perform "Trail Maintenance". With our compact tractor it would take most of a day to carry in material to repair a area. Now with wider trails we are able to do the same repair with in a hour or 2.  I to enjoy tight trails with lots of turns but we needed to considered the safety of all riders.

If it's a trail system then leave it a trail, when you say you need to widen to drive a tractor on it now your building a road for "Road Maintenance" . I thought that Reforest was just that, not a network of Interior Roads.

You would love our club's trails... we make them narrow on purpose so ATVs can't use them and the brides are only 24 inches wide.  :D
