Reading it earlier today it sounded malicious, reading the updated version explains a lot more...

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/06/update_albion_man_killed_after.html

Albion, NY - An Oswego County man died after he drove an all-terrain vehicle into a half-inch thick steel cable on private property off Centerville Road in the town of Albion, authorities said.

Christopher F. Carrier, 45, of 554 Centerville Road, Albion, was driving a 2007 Polaris ATV north on a private ATV trail around 8:10 p.m. Saturday when he struck the cable, state police said.

The wire bounced up and hit Carrier in the neck, throwing both Carrier and his passenger, Desmond Parsons, 22, off the vehicle, state police said.

Carrier was pronounced dead at Oswego Hospital. Parsons, of 600 Centerville Road, Albion, was treated for a shoulder injury at University Hospital, according to state police.

State police, Altmar volunteer firefighters and Northern Oswego County Ambulance (NOCA) crews responded to the crash off Centerville Road, between River Point Drive and county Route 48.

Ambulance crews performed CPR on Carrier after the crash.

The steel cable that Carrier struck was attached to two trees on each side of a driveway, which leads to a camp, as well as a wooded area, authorities said.

Carrier had been at a cookout with neighbors before he and his friend got onto the ATV, according to Carrier’s sister Kim Lehman.

Carrier did not own an ATV, but had driven one before, his sister said.

Around dusk Saturday, Carrier drove the ATV from the cookout, onto the private trail behind some neighboring properties, authorities said. Carrier then drove the ATV north, toward Centerville Road when he struck the cable, which had a padlock, authorities said.

Steve Cronk, president of the Oswego County ATV Club, said while the crash did not happen on an Oswego County ATV trail, he feels saddened about what happened.

“The ATV club sends out its condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” Cronk said today. “We hope and pray nothing like this ever happens to anyone else.”

Cronk said many people in the area use cables to keep vehicles off their property. He also noted that cables are used often because they are less expensive than steel gates.

“All ATV riders should use extreme caution when they’re riding because cables are hard to see,” Cronk said. “You never know. There are people that use fences and wires and ropes for barricades.”

State police said no charges are expected to be filed.

Carrier served in the U.S. Navy for six years in the late 1980s and 1990s, and works at Revere Copper Brass in Rome. He is survived by his parents, Neal and Sarah Carrier, of Holland Patent; and two sisters, Lehman, of Cold Brook, and Deb Davis, of Ilion.

“He was a wonderful person and had a great heart, always went out of his way to help people,” Lehman said. “Everybody is going to miss him.”

Phantom,

I believe your post is not needed as what it looks like as I'm sure the landowner feels bad for what happens. It is a common practice for folks to block off their driveways to their camps.

I feel sorry for all involved.

how about dont ride on private land where you arent supposed to go and it never would have happened? im not trying to sound like a dick, becuase its unfortunate that he died and not just a small injury and a lesson learned, but riding on private property is just yet another thing that gives ATV riders a bad name. perhaps he had permission and i missing part of the story, but if he wasnt supposed to be in there thats bad news. i wonder if there was drinking involved at this cookout before operating said atv as well.

Yes you are missing a part of the story he was riding with permission on private land I just don't think he was familiar with the area. Out of the 300 co-workers I have, it seems like only the nice guys are the ones who die suddenly like this. Chris was a great guy that actually worked hard for everything he had, and it's too bad we lost another truely good guy. On another note I do believe that it is illegal to block acess to a trail, road or driveway with a cable that isn't flagged/signed properly.  An unmarked cable strung between 2 trees 18" off the ground is not a barricade but an intent to cause harm to a machine or rider.

My feelings exactly... flags will not last long in the weather but a piece or pieces of 2" WHITE PCV pipe strung on the cable is visible and will last quite a while.

ah, well thats different then. and yes i do believe you have to have some kind of sign or marker hanging off the center of such a barracade thats not easily visible, that landowner could face some legal consequences from the family if he had permission to ride there. especially written permission.
