Their was a lawsuit against Burdicks Crossing so we went to a landowner and rerouted the Trail. Coming from the hill to Brantingham as soon as you cross the Black River tou turn right and go up the hill and follow the new trail.

Permits... the permits separate the hill from Brantingham... no Lewis County permits and the ride to Brantingham is illegal. It's real nice what they have done to the citizens and taxpayers in Lewis County... and without grease or a kiss.

The LCATV association and County have also screwed the snowmobilers out of a long standing trail from Lyons Falls to Brantingham. For as long as I have been going up there the railbed has been open to sleds but the LCATV association couldn't find their own trail... No they had to try and force the gas pipeline people to allow ATVs on their property and now we are ALL screwed out of a major connecting trail for snowmobiles.

Thanks a lot for nothing

It doesn't sound too bad, except maybe for the folks that live, or have camps, on roads that will now be closed.  At least they will still allow traffic through town.

Anyone interested in a 3 bdrm 2bath home with a 24x24 garage, 3.72 acres with a pond and a recently cleared area for a 26x40 garage? Will include all trusses and steel needed for garage. Bought this house so I could ride from my driveway on sled or ATV and now that I'll no longer be able to do either from here, I'll sell the house for the same reasons.

CatsJ35 what road is your camp on?

I will just say that with the Towns that have been forced to close their roads we have been working with those towns and now have more off road trails than ever before.

Sorry to hear that Jason... guess in the greedy money grab that Lewis County has become they didn't figure that they would loose some dedicated riders and club members in the process.
My question is what is the use of having ATV and snowmobile trails when there is no one left to ride them?

I say they want all the money for trail permits let them have it and with all that money they better save enough to PAY trail maintenance workers and groomer operators because the volunteers will all wake up one day and give up... The Alarm Clock is is ringing... Time to heed the call.

Lewis County also needs to realize that with all the permit fees and tax increases they are going to loose their volunteers that live out of the area and have camps there. They will change the demographic of the people who use the trail systems from property owners who volunteer and spend money in the area at businesses like building supplies, propane suppliers and the like to tourists that don't give a damn about the local businesses other than hotels and eateries and who don't volunteer. Plus once they get a taste of what the trails are really like they most likely won't be back.

Phantom,

You and I agree on most any topic that comes up here.  Even the sticky ones, but I definitely don't take the same position as you on trail permits.  While we've never met, we have a few friends in common, and I know that you're a normal guy...at least as normal as anyone on a bike can be.   :D  Help me see your position.

What gives?

Here's why I don't think it's an evil thing:

If you look anywhere else in the US, off roaders are losing trails at a spectacular rate.  I'm looking to leave NY State very soon, and one of the things I've been looking for is another area that has a trail system like we do here.  The only place close is West Virginia, and there are too many reasons to not live there.  No other state on the East coast has any public riding.  Period.  If I knew that I could move to the Carolinas, pay $75.00 each year to be able to ride off road...as opposed to near 0 miles of riding there, I'd do it in a blink.  But you can't.  It doesn't exist there.  Here in NY I can buy one permit, ride from Parish to Brantingham.  Of course a lot of the riding on the Hill is not exactly off road, but the miles of trail are growing slowly, and this program is in it's infancy.  Even so, today I can ride my dirt bike to a restaurant 100 miles away!!  Legally!!  Holy CRAP!!!

There are plenty of instances where we pay organizations to look out for us.  The AMA, NRA, AARP, NYSSA, and even local clubs.   For the cost of a nice meal these guys do TONS of work on my behalf.  They get trails built, visit town meetings, get roads opened....essentially get a complete trail system built....and all I had to do was give them a registration fee.  I think it is the best bargain for your money that you can find anywhere....if you ride.  If you get out once a year it's less of a bargain, but still not much more than you'd pay for a day at many race tracks.

You're smart enough to know that once you start building any kind of organization that there are going to be flaws.  It can't be helped.  Losing some roads in Turin definitely sucks, but I don't see this as Lewis County's fault.  They fought to keep them open.   The permit system sucks for someone that  rarely rides, but the best deal in town for ANYONE that rides off road in Northern NY.  I don't mind paying my permit fees to anyone that is doing this amount of work in my behalf.

What am I missing that has you so fired up?

(I know how things can get lost in the translation when posting stuff online.  You may not be reading this in the same tone I am typing it.  I'm definitely not attacking you, or even standing in opposition to you, just trying to figure out why we have suck a big gap in our positions on trail permits.)

Joe,
No offense taken...
I just want the people that are behind all this to be honest and not beat around the bush. If the connecting trail that is being discussed is a permit only trail... say so. Don't lead people to think there is a way to get somewhere when in fact you need to pay to get there.
I am privy to some behind the scenes info concerning the Brantingham to Lyons Falls railbed trail that was lost this year due to some bungling on the part of those involved. This was a corridor snowmobile trail that was used for years and all of a sudden it got shut down. IMO because the County was pushing Iroquois Gas to allow ATVs to use this trail  Everyone is quiet on this... I have it on good authority that one if not several NYSSA directors are looking into this matter due to the fact that it is was a corridor trail and the truth will be known sooner than later.

In Lewis County I am a snowmobiler first and a motorcyclist second, the main reason we have a camp in Lewis County is to snowmobile, if the County is going to do things to jeopardize the snowmobile trail system in order to get ATVs on the same system I am against that. They can open and run all the seasonal roads they want... I don't care because no one can shut them down except for the Towns or County and maybe Bruce Krug but when they start screwing with previously existing snowmobile trails on private property with bad outcome they no longer get my support.

Fair enough.
On another note, I'm gonna be in Phili area on Monday/Tuesday Jan, 23rd/24th.  You're not far from there, right?  Want to grab dinner one of those nights?
