If there was one thing that never made sense to me it was why a majority of sport quads that everyone buys for their seat of your pants acceleration and break neck speeds comes unequipped with any kind of speedometer. Yet its much heftier cousin's the utilities come with it standard. I often found myself blasting across open fields or down woodsy trails wishing I knew how close to out of control I was.
The solution to this was simple, TrailTech’s ATV computer, the Endurance. The Endurance is so much more then just a speedometer though. It features:
- Current Speed (mph or km/h)
- Average Speed
- Maximum Speed
- Current Trip Distance
- Odometer (track total miles)
- Riding Time
- Trip Time - Stopwatch
- Accumulated riding time (track total hours)
- Clock
- Lubrication reminder, which you can program to your own specification of time and/or distance.
- Maintenance reminder
- Incrementing and decrementing
The Endurance is also very configurable using the circumference of your tires to determine and compile its data. To top this all off the TrailTech has another very impressive feature. If you own another ATV, dirt bike or sport bike it is possible to use the same computer for both machines, by simply purchasing another mounting system and sensor kit. The computer stores all data for both machines and all the rider has to do is switch modes from one machine to the other. The computer quickly and easily slides in and out of the included mounting bracket, or if you desire, and I would recommend, the complete billet dash. The dash adds a nice overall look to the machine, creates an excellent mounting point that is easy to read and provides protection to the computer if you get into some rough terrain. However do not worry about the computer, as it is water and dirt resistant.
Once programmed the computer works flawlessly activating as soon as the front wheel begins to turn, so there is no on/off switch here to fumble with while wearing your riding gloves. It also shuts off after a set time so as not to run the battery dead. Once perfectly dialed in the speedometer is extremely accurate and I could see this being a big help to any X-Country or hare scramble racers. With all of the options you almost always need to have the instruction manual with you to operate it.
However there are a few minor flaws that I found with the setup. The entire package is rather lacking in decent installation instructions (see our
HOW-TO section). Although they are fairly straight forward, some quick images are always a welcome sight. The night view feature, which is in fact an Indiglo type illumination, is abrupt to shut off as it only stays on approximately 5 second, making it difficult for street bikes to keep an eye on there speed. Last but not least, and this is not at all the fault of TrailTech, is the LCD display. If you park the your bike in the direct sun light for any extended periods of time and do not remove the Endurance like the instructions suggests it will black out the screen not allowing you view the read-out. This is a limitation of the LCD and should be thought of as anything more then a responsibility of the rider towards care of his/her machine.
For anyone who owns or plans on buying a sport quad or dirt bike I would highly recommend the TrailTech Endurance computer for maintenance tracking if nothing else.
