I would think if its rubbing, the rope will break also...
I am thinking of switching to rope also, but I wont do it until I break a cable most likely.
I like the idea of not getting metal strands in my hand... and I think it is a lot more flexible....

i like the idea of no fish hooks an the rope doesnt kink either . also the rope floats on water . i saw a show on tv last night where the big 4x4 trucks use it . ratin of the rope is much stronger than cable also the say . just tried of the cable wearin when i plow snow. also if ir breaks while winchin it will fall rather than fly. i seen cables fall be for an thats no fun

Get the rope and when it's plow season put a short piece of the old cable on for plow duty. When it's play season switch back to the rope.
Seems the rope would be a lot easier to unwind/store and rewind than a cable. You could always carry the rope somewhere on the machine incase you get stuck while plowing.

...Skippydoo pointed out to me,get something to hold your hook up and solid while riding, says the bouncing up and down flat spot the cable, and once that happens it breaks in that spot..I've seen the samething on big cables , so I'm sure it would happen to these.   I just took a bungi and wrapped it through the hook up to the bumper.

I never thought of that.
I keep my cable tight against the roller's when I am not using it so the cable isn't dangling.
I wonder if I should be doing that? is that to much stress on the cable?

I use old rollerblade wheels to keep the hook snug against the fairlead. Used to use the "strap it to the rack" method until I watched a guy fold his top rack in half while trying to work his way out of a hole. He was leaning against his switch.  OMFG

Not to say that it wouldn't still cause some damage, but the rubber those wheels are made of is pretty tough.

The roller fairlead on our Sportsman allows the cinched loop of the cable through and the hook its self pulls up tight against the fairlead. I though all rollers worked this way?

Anyone with a plate/block style fairlead is just looking for problems.

The metal to metal contact will eventually damage your rollers and you can seriously damage your winch if for some reason you hit your IN button on your winch and the hook is pulled against the rollers very tightly. I learned this a long time ago when I was into Jeeps and off-roading with larger 4x4's.

That's where I got the idea for the roller-blade wheels! High density rubber/polycarbonate that had the perfect size hole in the center AND they cost a LOT less!
