Click here >>>Article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle <<<

Regarding the fatality, Rochester fire Capt. Dan McBride said the victim and a friend, whose names were not released, were riding their ATVs along a dirt trail that runs along a ridge high above the Genesee River near or in a remote section of Turning Point Park.

McBride said the victim's friend went ahead, then doubled back and found him trapped under an oak tree, still on his ATV. The friend called 911 about 1:30 p.m.

"This really was an act of God," McBride said. "He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time."

McBride said that section of the trail features a grove of mature oak trees, extending about 60 to 70 feet before they branch off into canopies. The tree that fell on the victim left a stump about 45 feet tall and about 24 inches in diameter, he said. Several other trees fell in a similar fashion, he said, leaving the trail littered with thick branches.

Fire and police reached the site through Riverside Cemetery. Crews from the city Forestry Department were called to cut a trail through the fallen limbs to aid in the recovery.

"The force of the wind must have been tremendous," said McBride. "It must have just been exploding in there as the wind knocked those trees over."

This is very unfortunate, I saw this last night on the news and I was a little shocked at first. Then I thought about this very statement you made, PJ. I'm not a religious person, I don't go to church except for very special occasions. When something like this happens however I am forced to believe that this can't just be coincidence. This fellow had important work to do elsewhere and was called to duty. It's as simple as that, in my mind.

Still, I feel for his family. Sudden loss like this can be extremely difficult to deal with.
