Looking at buying a 2003 Yamaha TTR 125L for the grandson. It will be his first bike. Whats the Good, Bad, or Known Problems with this bike.

Seems to be a long running model with Yamaha. The bike is clean, no rust anywhere, some minor scratches on the front fender. The wheels and tires are in good shape. I would estimate between 20-40 hours of use looking at the rear tire wear. Chain and sprockets looked almost new, very little play in chain. Oil looked and smelled fine, Brakes are solid and surprisingly it supported my 300+lbs without bottoming unless I really jumped on it.

It was listed for $1,400, I can get it for $1000. I'm also looking at adding a front light ($70 + labor) for safety and night time visibility.

Seems like a decent buy. Any thoughts or known issues with this model. It does not have a load pipe so Phantom should be happy  LOL

It fits him well and leaves him a little growing room. He just has to get used to the clutch. He's used to his Honda wheeler that has the automatic clutch.

Also, it will be titled, registered and insured in PA. but mostly ridden in NY. Any thing special needed for riding in NY? Or just carry the registration and insurance paperwork like an ATV?

Sounds like a good bike at a good price, but I am no expert....
I am sure someone will chime in here.

Sounds like a good bike at a great price Nelson. Like all Yamahas they are stone cold reliable and require little maintainence.
Register as an ATV in PA and ride all you want in NY just like the wheelers. I assume Pa. allows motorcycle registration as an ATV since that bike is not a DOT approved machine as a steetable bike. If not just register in NY as an ATV.
