The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said two people suffered minor injuries Friday after their all-terrain vehicle slammed into a deputy's patrol car.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., Deputy Jeremy McIntosh spotted an ATV being driven on Route 26 in the town of Champion.
Because it's a violation to operate an ATV on a public highway, McIntosh turned on his lights and siren to get the vehicle's operators to stop.
Instead, officials said the two people led the deputy on a pursuit on Route 26 between Great Bend and Carthage.
"The occupants crossed over and were actually going at traffic head-on and therefore the deputy proceeded to get in front of them and attempted to set up a road block...The occupants of the four-wheeler actually drove into the side of his patrol vehicle," said Undersheriff Larry Jobson.
The ATV riders, who had not been wearing helmets, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Carthage Area Hospital for treatment.
Deputy McIntosh was not hurt.
An accident reconstruction team was brought in to investigate the incident.
Jobson said he expected charges would be filed against the ATV riders.
