If you have a moto cross bike with an ATV registration, and insurance, can you ride it at Tug Hill?  I was thinking of getting one but don't want to limit my options.

You may want to think about a dual sport then. Something like a DR or XR-L, so that it's road legal as many of the roads on Tug Hill are now only open for ATV's for special events. Many are no longer open on a regular basis. The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce is your best source for info on what roads are open to ATV's and what roads aren't.

I'm sure you'll also have several folks chime in here on what they know about this subject also.

I would never buy/plate a bike as an ATV... street legal all the way. Opens a huge amout of riding opportunities that you cannot get to with an ATV plated bike. Unless you want to ride around with your ATV buddies (Sorry Guys!) in the dust and mud all the time go Dual Sport. My wife will be getting a D/S bike and her license by next spring and the ATV will be deligated to work around camp after that.

Examples:

Riding from the Hill to Brantingham and into the Adirondacks.

Riding from the Hill into and around Osceola and Redfield.

If you have a strictly offroad bike you have to register it as an ATV.  I don't think there's any other option with DMV.  Both of my offroad bikes are registered as ATV's.

I checked out the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce site and it's a great resource of ATV's.  I'll have to email them for more info on offroad bikes.  I tried emailing a couple of the ATV clubs listed, but one email bounced back and no one answered the other.  If anyone knows who to contact about riding DB's in Tug Hill please let me know.

Dirt Bikes are legal when registered as ATVs... You just need to stick to legal ATV trails.
No lights required but if you do not have lights you may not operate an hour before sunset to an hour after sunrise. It's in the NYS ATV manual that DMV hands out.

Look at the Chamber web site to determine where you may or may not operate.

Cool, thanks for that.

I have a dual sport, but it's too heavy for the off road riding I do.

Unless it's a V Strom or a big Beemer there is no place on Tug Hill you can go (legally) where weight of a D/S would be a factor IMO.
There is no single track or gnarly hills and such... just dirt roads.
